'Just Got on Twitter' and Other First Tweets From Federal Agencies
A roundup of the origins of government tweets using the microblogging site's new tool.
Twitter launched in 2006, and federal agencies began joining the site in 2007, with the real rush coming in 2009 after the Obama administration took hold and introduced more social media policies. By April 2012, every major federal agency was on the microblogging site.
A newly released tool from Twitter allows users to look back at their tweeting origins, sometimes revealing laughable results. Government agencies are no different, with some dipping their toes with cautious sample tweets and others diving right in with news and content. See the collection below:
