5G Could Be Coming To A City Near You

Tired of being stuck with 4G network speeds? A change might be coming your way soon. AT&T announced Wednesday more new information about its new mobile 5G network, namely, which cities will receive the lightning-fast internet speeds first. The announced locations are Dallas, Atlanta, and Waco, Texas, with more cities to be announced soon.

So why did AT&T pick major metropolitan areas? "It has to do with how we think about the infrastructure," said Igal Elbaz, AT&T's senior vice president of wireless network architecture and design, to Mashable.

The company said it's keeping an "aggressive schedule" to bring the technology to fruition this year. AT&T might have found itself in a race with Verizon, which says it plans to roll out 5G home internet also by the end of 2018.

This competition and pressure to bring 5G to reality is a good thing for tech users and their smart devices. "Think about IoT devices. Think of all of them connected to the network, being able to connect seamlessly without disrupting the regular usage of the network," Elbaz said.
