Eyak gets $15M defense contract
The sole-source engagement could be worth almost $22M if DOD command exercises all contract options.
Eyak Technology has won a $15 million contract from the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command in San Diego for network management software, related hardware and software, installation, and software license maintenance.
According to a Defense Department notice announcing the contract, the award was made under the Small Business Administration's 8(a) program for small, disadvantaged businesses. It was awarded without competitive bids.
The company, usually called EyakTek, is owned by a native Alaskan and is a subsidiary of the Eyak Corp., based in Cordova, Alaska. EyakTek is based in Herndon, Va., and is a partner of reseller GTSI.
The contract's base value is about $15 million. If the government pursues all the options, the value would rise to about $22 million, according to the notice. About 70 percent of the work will be performed in Dulles, Va., while Norfolk, Va.; Charleston, S.C.; and San Diego will each host about 10 percent.
Companies owned by Alaska natives have come under scrutiny in recent months. Some critics say the program, which gives the firms some privileges other types of 8(a) companies don't get, is ripe for misuse.
