Mark Zuckerberg Wants to Build an AI Butler

Mark Zuckerberg wants to be a little more like Tony Stark. The Facebook founder plans to build his own artificial intelligence-powered butler to help him out at home and work.

Zuckerberg announced his new year’s resolution in a Facebook post, where he describes his plan to create a “simple” AI assistant “like Jarvis in Iron Man” to assist him, his wife, and daughter Max. He wrote:

I’m going to start by exploring what technology is already out there. Then I’ll start teaching it to understand my voice to control everything in our home—music, lights, temperature and so on. I’ll teach it to let friends in by looking at their faces when they ring the doorbell. I’ll teach it to let me know if anything is going on in Max’s room that I need to check on when I’m not with her.

The AI butler will not only help Zuckerberg around the house, he said, but also be used to visualize data in virtual reality to help him build “better services” and lead Facebook “more effectively.”

Zuckerberg has previously challenged himself to read two books a month, meet a new person every day, and learn Mandarin. He tends to take these personal resolutions quite seriously; earlier this year, he delivered a 20-minute speech entirely in Mandarin at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

Zuckerberg plans to share his progress throughout the year. When one user commented, “Just don’t accidentally create Skynet,” Zuckerberg quipped: “I’ll be careful.”
