Air Force Software Hub Needs New Data Chief

The U.S. Air Force’s software innovation unit is looking for a new data chief, according to a job listing posted online. 

Kessel Run is searching for a chief data officer to oversee “all data engineering, data science, and advanced optimization and learning systems,” according to the posting. The CDO is the equivalent of a GS-15 position; Kessel Run operates primarily on a biannual hiring schedule, so the job is a two-year position with the option to stay on for two more years after that. 

“This position needs to represent our value of bias for action, meaning we need someone who can lead the creation of solutions,” the posting reads. “Regardless of our decision to rent, build, or buy, the Chief Data Officer will guide those decisions and support implementing the solutions.”

Candidates need at least 10 years of experience managing products, working throughout the lifecycle of various types of databases, and working with large-scale data sets. The posting also calls for candidates with machine-learning experience. 

Kessel Run provided a detailed summary of the job, describing duties including developing standards for artificial intelligence, cloud and digital services and contributing to talent and scaling strategies for the organization. 

The CDO job is based in Boston, according to the listing. Kessel Run operates both out of Boston and nearby Hanscom Air Force Base.
