Unisys wins HHS e-mail deal

Unisys Corp. officials are implementing a secure e-mail system that Department of Health and Human Services officials can use to coordinate personnel at the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institutes of Health and other operating divisions when they must respond to suspected biological attacks on government facilities.

The contract is for one base year and four one-year options, and is valued at up to $31 million. The system will connect 70,000 employees nationwide, according to Unisys officials.

When employees at an office discover a suspicious substance, for example, as soon as it is reported, the health agencies will be able to instantly exchange information and alerts via the system.

The contract was signed in February, but was announced today.
