The Office of Personnel Management has created a new division for federal personnel investigative services and promoted the senior official responsible for background investigations.

The organizational changes, announced Oct. 19, reflect OPM’s expanded role in conducting background investigations for federal agencies, including the Defense Department, OPM Director Linda Springer said. In February, DOD transferred responsibility for its security investigations, along with 1,800 investigative employees, to OPM. About a third of OPM employees and more than 6,000 contractors now work on employee background investigations.
The new division headquarters, located in Boyers, Penn., supports federal security offices worldwide. OPM’s investigative services employees worked on more than 1.4 million requests for background investigations in fiscal 2005.
