"Interfaces for Personal Identity Verification"
The National Institute of Standards and Technology released technical specifications this week for vendors to use in products or technologies that must be compatible with the federal government’s new computer-readable personal identity verification (PIV) cards.
NIST Special Publication 800-73 Revision 1 describes technical specs for the secure identity credentials that federal agencies will begin issuing to employees and contractors Oct. 27. They include a PIV data model, a communications interface and an application programming interface.
According to its authors, the 63-page document defines and interprets the PIV standards to ensure interoperability and performance.
