Letter: Airport employees are not beyond temptation
A reader writes to say that it took 13 years after the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland, and the 2001 terrorist attacks to address airport security.
Regarding "IG: TSA needs better ways to catch criminals."
This gap in security is present at the majority of airports in the United States.
The Comair employees used a baggage claim device to get the contraband into the secure area without the TSA being aware.
The
fallacy exists that all airport employees are beyond the temptation to
make a buck doing something illegal. Those guys are retired and are
being replaced by entry level employees whose loyalty is determined by
the size of their paycheck. The majority of these new employees are a
few weeks away from their old jobs, which required them to ask, "Do you
want french fries with that hamburger?"
The gap is being
addressed but we are a reactive society. It took 13 years and the 2001
terrorist attacks to highlight a situation that occurred over
Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988.
