David Ausefski, associate director of shared services at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Information Technology Services Office, led the implementation of the Federal Desktop Core Configuration. The FDDC involved setting security controls on more than 23,000 computers, including those vital to CDC scientific laboratories.

The Health and Human Services Department inspector general gave the CDC high marks for its comprehensive establishment of security policy and Office of Management and Budget requirements on a large scale, said Judy Kerry, director of CDC’s Information Technology Services Office.

Ausefski went well beyond governmentwide mandates with his skill and innovation, said Jim Seligman, the CDC’s chief information officer. He also implemented agency laptop encryption and accountable asset inventory. “He used his expertise in programming, data management and IT infrastructure to address each of these requirements in a new and clever approach to achieve a highly automated, successful and low-cost solution,” Seligman said.

As a result, Ausefski’s leadership and personal contributions have led to significantly stronger IT security defenses throughout CDC, Seligman said.
