Federal 100: John Streufert
John Streufert
Deputy Chief Information Officer and Chief Information Security Officer
State Department
Streufert led a team that developed and deployed the Risk Scoring Program, which gives administrators the ability to continuously monitor risks to State’s information technology infrastructure. Streufert's efforts significantly lowered IT security risks, even in divisions outside his control, such as embassies.
The program, which goes beyond the reporting requirements mandated by the Federal Information Security Management Act, constantly scans for vulnerabilities, tags weak configurations, fixes the biggest problems first and publishes monthly grades.
“John’s impact has spanned far beyond the boundaries of the State Department’s" initiative, said Teresa Carlson, vice president of U.S. federal government sales at Microsoft. “He has been the catalyst for a growing movement around the revamping of government IT security laws, policies, standards and implementation practices.”
