Intruders hit up the payment card processing systems servicing MAPCO, a convenience store operator with locations mainly in the South. The breach might have exposed customer credit and debit card information. In a May 6 statement about the breach, MAPCO officials said investigators have since “disabled the malware that was used in this incident while establishing additional safeguards designed to prevent this from happening in the future.” The event affected an undisclosed number of payment transactions that occurred “at MAPCO locations between March 19--‐25, April 14--‐15 and April 20--‐21.” The company is notifying potential victims that information might have been stolen to initiate fraudulent credit and debit card transactions. Law enforcement authorities, including the FBI, are helping MAPCO identify the perpetrator.
