Name.com loses names, credit card numbers and other personal data

The Web hosting company on May 8 notified customers by email and Twitter of a security breach.  The message informed clients that their usernames, email addresses, passwords and credit card account data “may have been accessed by unauthorized individuals.”

The email stated the hack likely was an attempt to gain information regarding “a single, large commercial account at Name.com.”

Customer credit card information and passwords were encrypted. The keys to unlock the encryption “are stored physically in a separate remote location that was not compromised. Therefore, we don’t believe that your credit card information was accessed in a usable format,” according to the message.

The company has reset all passwords and customers can only regain access by choosing a new password “via the unique link that has been emailed to you,” the email stated.
