Turkish government “Facebook” page infects netizens
Social Media // Turkey
Cyber crooks debuted a new social media site on a server belonging to the Turkish government. A not-so-friendly one. Visitors are prompted to download special software for access, and the PCs of those who follow the instructions are invisibly hijacked for use in a network of attack computers, known as a botnet.
“Cybercriminals behind the campaign have uploaded a malware-serving fake ‘DivX plug-in Required!” Facebook-themed Web page. Once socially engineered users execute the malware variant, their PCs automatically join the botnet operated by the cybercriminals behind the campaign,” Webroot explains.
