Chinese and Russian spies allegedly guzzled Finnish communications

A hack into the Foreign Ministry’s data network is being investigated as a case of serious cyberespionage.

A Finnish TV station attributed the infiltration to China and Russia. Erkki Tuomioja, the country’s foreign minister, would only go so far as saying foreign intelligence agents were suspected.

The broadcaster reported the perpetrators had sustained access to the network for years and seemed to have targeted communications between Finnish and European Union officials. Tuomioja said the most highly classified information was not exposed.

Erkki Tuomioja said the breach of the Foreign Ministry's data network was discovered in spring, and Finland's intelligence service was investigating it as a case of serious espionage.
