Cyber burglars reroute Michigan prof’s paycheck to Utah
Education // Michigan, United States
Western Michigan University has announced it will reimburse an employee whose credit union account was breached last year.
Ray Cool, an assistant professor, said a hacker had stolen his Dec. 17 paycheck by getting into his GoWMU account and changing his routing number to a bank in Utah.
At first, WMU told Cool he would not be paid for the amount that was taken. He subsequently filed a grievance with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
Cool said he got news of the repayment on Feb. 3 and was relieved.
WMU's Department of Public Safety is investigating the apparent rerouting of a second employee’s wages, Interim Chief Blaine Kalafut said.
