Pro-Palestinian hackers vandalize Delaware State Treasury website

Government (U.S.) // Delaware, United States

Hacktivists going under the moniker “SaLeM” defaced an official website of the state of Delaware with pro-Palestinian messages.

One note read:

Hacking sites will not STOP!!!

Unless Gaza is Free

WE want the freedom for palastain

USA said that Israil will stop attacking gaza

However we Don’t believe on that And hacking is On.

The message was seen early on Monday and removed by around 9:35 a.m.

“There are some weaknesses in the website that allowed [the hackers] to post that anti-Israel message on the website,” said Elaine Starkey, chief of security for the state’s Department of Technology and Information.

Unlike other agency sites, the Delaware State Treasury portal is not maintained through the state’s website, Delaware.gov, but rather managed by a third party, Hosting.com.

Hosting.com officials said the state controls the web software that was compromised.

While “HOSTING did not install nor do we manage the affected application or its security protocol, we are working closely with the customer to mitigate the situation and provide the optimal path forward,” John Enright, president of HostMySite, a division of hosting.com, said in an email.

Several other Delaware sites that were checked appeared intact.

“[The Treasury] wanted their own look, so they decided several years ago not to go with the Delaware.gov website,” Starkey said.

At least several dozen other sites nationwide were affected by the vandalism.

“It’s clear that this is related to a larger defacement campaign,” Starkey said.
