Payment Systems at SuperValu Grocers Are Hit Again
Food and Beverage // Minnesota, United States
The grocery store company that was attacked by cybercriminals in June and July has suffered a second, separate hack.
This time the malicious software used was different and the damage was less severe – partly because of technology deployed since the first breach.
Malware was installed on the part of SuperValu’s computer network that processes card payments at some Shop ‘n Save, Shoppers Food & Pharmacy and Cub Foods stores.
Cardholder information is largely safe after this go-round.
The malicious code was installed at numerous stores, but only succeeded in capturing data from four Cub Foods locations in Hastings, Shakopee, Roseville and White Bear Lake, Minnesota.
The data included account numbers, and in some cases the expiration date, the cardholder’s name and other data. But even if data was taken, SuperValu said it doesn’t believe it was transmitted to a third party.
The first incident occurred on the company’s payment system between June and July and could have resulted in the theft of account numbers, cardholder names, expiration dates and other data from payment cards at some stores in the Shop ‘n Save, Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, Farm Fresh and Cub Foods chains.
