Craigslist Resuscitated After Domain Name Breach
Web Services
Hackers compromised Domain Name Service, or DNS, records used by one of the classified ad website’s domain registrars.
According to a blogpost by company CEO Jim Buckmaster, Craigslist began redirecting unsuspecting visitors to non-Craigslist sites around 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Some visitors landed on the site DigitalGangster[dot]com. DigitalGangster is the name of a sort of forum for hackers who allegedly breached the Twitter accounts of Bill O’Reilly and Britney Spears, among others, in 2009.
Craigslist was back online Monday and Buckmaster claims the DNS issue has since been resolved.
However, some Internet service providers might still have the bogus DNS information stored.
DNS hacks involve compromising systems that translate website names like “Craigslist.org” into numeric IP addresses. As a result, users are rerouted to rogue IP addresses.
