Hacked La La Land Street Sign: "READ A F—-ING BOOK"
Transportation // California, United States
The obscene message appeared on two Los Angeles area road displays.
The company that owns the signs, Traffic Management Incorporated, and the Los Angeles Department of Transportation confirmed there was a compromise.
A TMI spokeswoman said whoever is responsible would have had to physically break into the trailer based sign. But she also acknowledged the possibility that it's Wi-Fi-enabled.
"It looks like it was hacked," agreed Tina Backstrom, of LADOT.
One sign—at Fourth and Hope streets—was in place to aid traffic flow at a construction-type project, according to TMI.
LADOT said it is unclear what the sign was there for: It was not a city sign or project, Backstrom said, and dozens upon dozens of these signs appear throughout the city for construction, utility and even Caltrans projects.
Lucky for City Hall, L.A. "doesn't own any changeable message signs," she said.
