Pair Sold Chinese Military Secrets to Foreigners
Government (Foreign) // China
Two men in China photographed military projects and equipment and sold them overseas.
One of the men, described only by his family name Han, was approached on social media in March 2014 by a foreigner from an unnamed country who claimed to be a journalist.
The 30-year-old man was then instructed to take pictures of ongoing work near a military project.
He entered restricted zones, took pictures with his phone and sent them abroad via the Internet. The man also was instructed to attend a conference on defense technology programs in Beijing so he could record meetings and take photographs.
The other man, 23, identified by his family name Zhang, was approached by someone who claimed to be the editor of an unnamed foreign magazine. He was directed to buy a professional-grade camera and take photographs of China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning.
The man later took a job with a foreign military enterprise to gather better information.
