California Employee Faces Charges over College Hack and Drug Possession
Education // California, United States
Lacey Fowler, a human resources analyst at Cuesta College, allegedly sent sensitive data on school staff to a personal email account without authorization.
The information Fowler, who was on medical leave, sent to herself included home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and Social Security numbers. College employees do have remote access to the data, but she allegedly exceeded her access rights.
Employees were notified of the breach on June 11.
An investigation into the breach turned up 4.5 pounds of methamphetamine and about 7 ounces of heroin, worth reportedly $27,000, in a storage container on Fowler’s property.
She and her husband, Chad Fowler, face similar drug charges.
“In addition, prosecutors filed misdemeanor drug and paraphernalia possession charges against her on June 23 for an offense that allegedly occurred May 30 — one day before the suspected data breach,” the Tribune reports.
