Ransomware is a security threat on the rise. In increasing numbers, hackers are breaking in, encrypting data and not releasing it until a ransom has been paid.

The Homeland Security Department reported 321 cases of potential ransomware against the federal government since the summer of 2015. Hackers have gone after organizations including utility providers and fire departments.

While hackers typically target larger organizations, it is possible to fall victim to ransomware as an individual. Before an attack happens, be sure to back up your data to the cloud -- ransomware can affect everything connected to your local network.
