Cygnet Storage Solutions Inc. the company formed when DynaTek Automation Systems Inc. purchased ATG Cygnet Inc. earlier this fall is adding CD-ROM technology from its parent company to its storage product line.

Mike Griswold vice president of Cygnet said the company would continue its existing line of jukeboxes for 12-inch optical disks which are used in many federal agencies. But he said the deal with DynaTek would allow Cygnet to expand its presence in the storage market.

"For so long we have been a one-product company " Griswold said. "Now we have a product family. Twelve-inch will always be a viable marketplace and CD is an up-and-coming marketplace."

Canada-based DynaTek bought San Jose Calif.-based ATG Cygnet in late September after ATG Cygnet filed for bankruptcy. Sam Gur DynaTek's chief executive officer said Cygnet Storage Solutions would be "the flagship company for DynaTek's entry into the United States market."

Linda Kempster storage media specialist with the federally funded IIT Research Institute Lanham Md. said the transition is unlikely to affect federal customers. "There are going to be tons of people who never knew [ATG] Cygnet left."

Kempster said the addition of DynaTek's CD-ROM and CD-Recordable products to Cygnet's offerings "will probably just strengthen their market position because they will have something else to sell." She noted that ATG Cygnet had planned to bring CD-based products of its own to market last year.

New Systems

At the Federal Imaging show late last month Cygnet showed two new CD-Recordable systems from DynaTek: Crossfire designed for mastering a single CD-ROM disc and Replicator for reproducing discs. Both products are expected to ship later this year. In addition Cygnet demonstrated DynaTek's InfiniDISC CD library.

Cygnet plans to continue its existing General Services Administration schedule reseller agreements with DLT Solutions Inc. Sylvest Management Systems Corp. and The Severn Companies. In addition Cygnet supplies optical storage systems under contracts with the Internal Revenue Service the Defense Finance and Accounting Service and the Immigration and Naturalization Service among other agencies.
