V-ONE launches its new federal division

V-ONE Corp. launched a federal division to hone its focus on the government security products market and solidify relationships with integrators.

The Rockville Md.-based company announced last week the formation of V-ONE Government Systems which will be headed by Ken Newcomer formerly director of business development for the military systems division at Electronic Data Systems Corp.

Since its inception in 1993 V-ONE has been known primarily as a firewall vendor targeting mainly Defense and intelligence agencies.

However V-ONE is expanding its reach by marketing a complete product package geared toward securing electronic commerce transactions.

The company's security package SmartGATE 2.2 provides authentication authorization accounting encryption key distribution and proxy capabilities. Newcomer said federal agencies will soon begin to employ packages such as SmartGATE to meet the Clinton administration's demanding mandate to adopt widespread electronic commerce applications.

"A lot of the promise of electronic commerce and the Internet has been held back and security is the missing piece " Newcomer said. "We've got the solution to that problem."

Newcomer plans to develop relationships with federal integrators to market the company's products. He also plans to go after the General Services Administration schedule contracts and several indefinite-delivery indefinite-quantity contracts. In addition to SmartGATE V-ONE markets a firewall product that is the first commercially available meeting federal requirements for the Defense Message System.

V-ONE's federal customers include the Bureau of Land Management Air Force Joint Chiefs of Staff Securities and Exchange Commission and National Security Agency.
