As DISA turns. In yet another installment of my favorite series "What's Up on Courthouse Road? " I've confirmed that Col. (promotable) James Hylton will depart the Army Signal Command at Fort Huachuca Ariz. later this month for a new job as director of operations for DISA. Hylton currently the ASC G3 will replace Air Force Brig. Gen. John Meincke recently elevated to the vice director slot. Hylton might have thought it hot in the summertime in Arizona but just wait until he gets to Courthouse Road.
* Life after NISMC. I've picked up strong signals from my Washington Navy Yard remote unit (hidden among all the other antennas on top of the NPIC building) that top NISMC civilian honcho Valerie Wallick will join the Marv Langston Navy CIO shop in Crystal City Va. with some folks speculating that she could end up as the deputy.
* CIO comm confusion. The Navy CIO office has spent the past month moving into its new Crystal City offices and creating its own set of communications problems. The Interceptor left a slew of messages for Ron Turner on the CIO Transition team over the past three weeks only to be told by a team member "Oh that was a cell phone number and we haven't figured out how to retrieve the messages." Well it's nice to know the communicators are communicating again. Here's the new (wired) number for Langston's office: (703) 602-2103. Tell them the Interceptor sent you. If I generate enough calls I may win my own bound and autographed copy of the IT-21 specs.
* Hiring binge. That's the only way to describe retired DISA director Lt. Gen. Al Edmonds' approach to his new job as president of Tri-Cor Industries. Recent hires include Anne Gallagher from SNS. Gallagher a Beltway veteran also has held jobs at Informix and Nortel as well as AFCEA and ITAA pro bono positions.Former military hires made by Edmonds include Bud Jones a SOCOM 0-6 and John Weimer the former Air Force Standard Systems Group vice commander who will open a Tri-Cor office in Montgomery Ala.
* Real warp speed. "Star Trek" fans will find it fitting that the USS Enterprise battlegroup will have the first ships outfitted with the complete IT-21 hardware and software suite. John Undset C4I program chief for CINCLANTFLT said the Enterprise IT upgrade slated to start in November 1998 will include a fiber LAN with ATM switches - as close to warp speed comm as possible.
* Movin' the mail. Afloat e-mail has boomed according to Undset. The USS Teddy Roosevelt sent 770 000 e-mails in a six-month deployment while the USS Kennedy has already topped that figure in the first three months of her deployment. This traffic includes crew e-mail and while that can't be measured exactly "the number of [U.S. Postal Service] letters to the Kennedy have gone down while the number of packages to the ship have gone up." The crew Undset surmised uses e-mail to request goodies from home.
