GAO Examines School Technology Issues

In a report on school technology issued this month, the U.S. General Accounting Office found a great deal of disparity among the funding sources schools typically tap for technology programs. Barriers to funding identified in the report include competition with building infrastructure priorities and citizen opposition to tax hikes.

The report, which delved into funding issues in five school districts, was commissioned by three U.S. senators: Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) and Carol Moseley-Braun (D-Ill.). It directed GAO auditors to determine the funding sources that districts commonly use in building technology infrastructures and the barriers they meet in doing so.
