Hall goes to Customs from Energy

S.W. Woody'' Hall, the chief information officer with the Energy Department, has accepted a job at the Customs Service as the assistant commissioner for information and technology and the CIO. Hall will replace Edward Kwas, who retired from Customs in January.

S.W. "Woody'' Hall, the chief information officer with the Energy Department, has accepted a job at the Customs Service as the assistant commissioner for information and technology and the CIO. Hall will replace Edward Kwas, who retired from Customs in January.

Hall said "major challenges'' for Customs include "sustaining current operations, establishing an enterprise architecture, institutionalizing capital planning for IT and moving ongoing modernization efforts forward.''

Samuel Banks, acting customs commissioner, said Hall would start this week. Banks said the agency chose Hall after consulting with "some of our foremost critics [about] what skills we should be looking for.''

Banks said Hall was the "ideal choice because of the strategic approach'' he takes to managing IT. Over the next six years, Customs plans to spend $400 million to craft an agencywide information systems architecture and $350 million updating its system for processing imports and exports.
