The Education Department today mailed to the nation's 15,000 school districts a how-to guide for educators to help fix Year 2000 problems in their computer systems.

"Squashing the Millennium Bug: A Year 2000 Compliance Guide for Elementary/Secondary Schools and School Districts,'' contains a 57-point checklist, computer tests, World Wide Web resources, sample letters to vendors, contract clauses and other suggestions that schools can use to ensure that their computer systems function properly in the new millennium.

The guide, which was a collaborative effort by Education and the Council of the Great City Schools, can be accessed at www.ed.gov/y2k under the heading "How To." The council is a coalition representing the nation's largest urban public school systems.
