GSA begins STAR program for IT professionals
Leading federal education and training groups today outlined their plans for a new program to help federal information technology professionals and managers deal with the changing way the government conducts business.
WILLIAMSBURG, Va.—Leading federal education and training groups today outlined their plans for a new program to help federal information technology professionals and managers deal with the changing way the government conducts business.
The new Strategic and Tactical Advocates for Results (STAR) program will train program managers to become strategic thinkers, leaders and innovators who understand the technology market and the management practices and politics that affect their agencies, Emory Miller, director of IT Professional Development at the General Services Administration's Office of Governmentwide Policy, said today at the agency's Roundup '99 conference.
"Information technology and agency business are one and the same today," Miller said. "IT is integral to the strategic business planning and mission of the agency."
The STAR program is still in the conceptual phase, but planners want to bring in experts from the private sector and academia to offer their expertise in each area, Miller said. Talks are already under way with Gartner Group, a Stamford, Conn.-based IT research firm, the Center for Creative Leadership, Greensboro, N.C., and Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., he said.
