The National Institute of Standards and Technology on Friday announced a new interactive Internet-based system that it will use to provide assistance and training to certain state-level science labs throughout the country.
The MeasureNet system ties together NIST with state weights and measures laboratories. Companies use these labs to calibrate standards for various processes from manufacturing medicine to filling cereal boxes.
For the first time, NIST will be able to observe calibrations via videoconferencing and offer immediate technical assistance to the labs. Using special software, NIST will be able to collaborate with state lab officials to view and edit documents and run applications on a PC in a participating state laboratory. The goal of MeasureNet is to make collaboration easier and more efficient and improve the accuracy of the calibration procedures.
On January 20, NIST delivered its first round of training to state officials on how to use MeasureNet.
