Virginia DMV First in Nation to Offer Online License Renewals

Virginia drivers with a clean record and Internet access can now renew their licenses without having to visit a customer service center.

All they need is a secure personal identification number and a major credit card since the commonwealth's Department of Motor Vehicles on Tuesday became the first in the nation to offer renewals on its World Wide Web site.

Motorists who choose to renew their licenses online (www.dmv.state.va.us) must get a DMV-issued PIN to ensure security and prevent outsiders from accessing personal information. Then they follow a series of instructions on the driver's license renewal page.

A confirmation page displays the renewal information and a credit card authorization number. New licenses are mailed out within three business days.

Citizens who have had their driving privileges suspended or revoked, or those with a commercial driver's license must still appear in person at a DMV customer service center. A complete list of exceptions can be found on the site.
