Quantum Corp. last week announced the latest addition to its Network Attached

Storage (NAS) product line, the Snap Server 4000.

The new Snap Server 4000 is designed to fulfill higher-end network needs

to meet the requirements for corporate workgroups in large organizations,

Internet service providers and Application Service Providers.

According to Erich Flynn, director of worldwide marketing at Quantum, the

Snap Server 4000 offers several key features that were missing in previous

versions of Snap Servers. First, it has 120G of storage, which is three

times the capacity of the next-largest device, the Snap Server 2000. In

addition, the Snap Server 4000 features Redundant Array of Independent Disks

(RAID) level 5 capability for greater data security (the unit has 85G of

storage space when RAID 5 is enabled), and it comes in a revamped form factor

that is rack-mountable.

"This product is going to help us move into larger corporate workgroups,"

Flynn said.

The Snap Server 4000 is compatible with every major operating system, including

Windows, Macintosh, Novell, Unix and Linux. It can be used for file serving,

remote office installations, software distribution and as a temporary scratch

space for network administrators. The product also ships standard with software

that saves a backup version of every file on a desktop PC to the Snap Server

so the unit can be used as a backup device.

Quantum's product line now includes the 10G Snap Server 1000, the Snap Server

2000 in 20G and 40G models, and the latest Snap Server 4000, with its 120G

of storage.

The Snap Server 4000 has a list price of $2,999 and will be available on

the GSA schedule through GTSI and Ingram Micro Inc. (reseller prices may

vary slightly).
