R.I. governor establishes telecom task force
The task force is charged with enhancing Rhode Island's competitiveness in the delivery of advanced telecommunications services
Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Almond last week announced the creation of a Telecommunications Task Force charged with enhancing the state's competitiveness in delivering services and expanding opportunities for businesses that rely on advanced telecom systems.
The task force's 16 members include representatives from government and industry. They will help develop a legislative and regulatory agenda to position the state as an attractive location for companies that rely heavily on advanced systems.
The group also will review regulatory and tax structures and attempt to reduce any administrative obstacles hindering the growth of Rhode Island's telecom industry.
In addition, Almond's recent budget address included $3.5 million for a technology fund to enhance the state's online customer service offerings.
"I am proposing $3.5 million for a technology fund to enhance information systems," he said. "We need to enter the age of e-government. That will enable us to deliver services to individuals more effectively and efficiently."
