Washington, D.C., DMV offers online registration renewals
A new system allows D.C. motorists to renew their vehicle registrations from any computer with an Internet connection and pay the required fees online by credit card
Washington, D.C., residents now can renew their vehicle registrations online thanks to a new system developed by the district's Department of Motor Vehicles and Link2Gov.com Inc.
The new system, which can be accessed at www.dmv.dcgov.org and has been operational for about 30 days, allows district motorists to renew their vehicle registrations from any computer with an Internet connection and to pay the required fees online by credit card, said Link2Gov.com's president Larry Wine. More than 100 people have used the service already, he said.
To renew a registration online, customers need: the registration renewal notice sent to them in the mail; the license plate number and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or their current registration card; current auto insurance card or policy number; and a Visa or MasterCard credit card.
Link2Gov.com, Inc., (www.link2gov.com) based in Nashville, Tenn., develops government-to-citizen Internet and telephony systems. The company built the system at no charge to the Washington DMV but negotiated a transaction fee that will not affect the consumers, Wine said, adding that the exact value of the fee is confidential.
The company is completing an extension of the district's system that will enable residents to get information on the status of their traffic tickets and be able to pay those fines online. That service should be up and running within the next 30 days, Wine said.
