CIO Council names e-gov heads
New committee will guide government in incorporating electronic initiatives
Senior information officers from the Commerce Department, the Transportation
Department and the Social Security Administration have been chosen to head
a new committee focused on creating an electronic government.
The Electronic Government Committee was created by the CIO Council to take
over work previously done by the Government Information Technology Services
Board, which is being dissolved.
The e-government committee will work on projects ranging from promoting
the government's use of smart cards to setting up an electronic government
shopping mall and enabling the use of public and private keys for Internet
security.
The three co-chairmen elected by the CIO Council are: Alan Balutis, deputy
chief information officer at Commerce; George Molaski, CIO at DOT; and John
Dyer, CIO at SSA.
The three represent the federal agencies already most involved in e-government
initiatives, Balutis said.
The e-government committee is expected to create six or more subcommittees,
and each will probably have about six members, a CIO Council official said.
Members are expected to include "many of the subject matter experts from
the GITS board," the official said.
