Alaska school libraries going online

In Alaska, the Anchorage School District will place its card catalog online

using Sirsi Corp.'s Unicorn Library Management System.

Anchorage is the second library system to choose Sirsi's Unicorn software

in the last month. Massachusetts' S.A.I.L.S. library network also chose

Alabama-based Sirsi.

The WebCat program allows a library's entire holdings, including the reference

desk, to be available on the World Wide Web.

Because of the extreme weather in Alaska, a Web catalog is very important

to students. Previously, each school library had a Web site, but they were

not accessible by a central search engine. The WebCat software will make

this possible.
