Gateway unveils revved-up servers

Gateway Inc. today unveiled its 8400 server, which is powered by Intel Corp.'s

new 700 MHz Xeon processors and is designed to offer agencies an affordable

solution for consolidating older, less powerful equipment.

"Out of all of our products, this aligns with the federal market the

most," said Chris Norman, director of server product marketing at Gateway.

"The Air Force and Department of Defense have said they are looking for

this kind of horsepower as they do the consolidation of their servers."

Powering the servers with Intel's new 700 MHz processors is a key reason

why the 8400 should prove to be appealing in the federal space, Norman said.

"For agencies looking for the latest and greatest in CPU horsepower,

this is it," Norman said. Usually with new servers, companies offer the

same price but bring the technology down, but the 8400 offers technology

and high-capability features into a departmental price range."

The 8400 will soon be available on the General Services Administration

schedule with pricing starting at $6, 299, Norman said.

"In addition to the price point, there was also a total cost-of-ownership

method to this product," he said. "The 8400 should support an agency for

anywhere from two to five years, and that is typical of what is required

on a lot of federal contracts."
