NEF offers information technology scholarships
Money for Internet-based IT courses will be available to those making less than $40,000 a year
The National Education Foundation is offering scholarships for information technology courses offered through its Web site.
Eight thousand scholarships are available to individuals making less than $40,000 annually. The scholarship will cover the $2,000 course fee but not the $75 registration fee. Two thousand scholarships have already been awarded, according to NEF president Appu Kuttan.
The scholarships allow winners to take any of the more than 400 Internet courses on the organization's World Wide Web site, www.cyberlearning.org. The courses cover a variety of topics, including operating systems, networking, Web design and electronic commerce.
Classes are either automated or led by instructors who post reading materials and conduct classes online. The instructor-led classes last about a month. Recipients will also receive free access to the site's online library of computer and IT books.
Scholarships are given on a first-come, first-served basis. Individuals can apply at NEF's Web site.
NEF, based in Alexandria, Va., is a nonprofit organization that aims to bring computer and IT skills to people who could not normally afford them.
