Unisys ships 32-way server

The proliferation of Unix and Microsoft Corp. Windows NT servers has left

many federal agencies looking for a cost-effective way to consolidate their

servers onto one mainframe-class system. Unisys Corp. introduced a new Intel

Corp.-based 32-processor server at the recent FOSE trade show that is designed

to do just that.

The Unisys e-@ction Enterprise Server ES7000 enables federal agencies

to consolidate data centers, migrate applications from Unix platforms to

Windows 2000 and host e-commerce solutions with scalability only previously

available on large Unix-based servers and proprietary mainframes, said Michael

Adelman, Unisys product manager.

"It's a modern enterprise server with mainframe DNA. It's got all the

mainframe goodness in the design of the box, but there's nothing proprietary

in it," Adelman said, adding that the new system's architecture was designed

by the company's mainframe engineers.

Through partitioning, the ES7000 has the ability to run multiple instances

of Windows NT, Windows 2000 and UnixWare while re-ducing the total cost

of operation, according to Adelman. Unisys demonstrated that using the 32-processor

ES7000 for server consolidation yields the most competitive overall cost

of any server for Windows 2000 software, based on Gartner Group Inc.'s tool

set for measuring total cost of ownership.

Unisys has filed for inclusion on the GSA schedule.
