InstallShield Software Corp. has developed a simple tool to give network

administrators more control over the installation of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows

operating system.

InstallTuner for Windows Installer enables customized distribution to

workgroups, classes of users or individual departments within an enterprise.

It gives administrators complete control over which software components,

shortcuts, features, files and options are installed and how they are presented

to the end user.

"InstallTuner uses an easy [graphical user interface] to modify any

Windows environment," said John McIndoe, public relations manager for the

Schaumburg, Ill.-based company. "It saves lots of money and time for network

administrators, and the government is all about saving time and money."

Currently, network administrators must use complex tools designed for

software developers in order to customize Windows applications. InstallTuner

bridges the gap between the developers and administrators, McIndoe said.

"This allows software developers to think of network administrators'

needs and network administrators to really get in touch with what the software

developers are doing," McIndoe said, adding that the product is currently

being beta tested in the Justice Department.

InstallTuner for Windows will be available early in the third quarter

of this year, and pricing will be announced at that time, McIndoe said.
