The Real-Time Traffic Adaptive Control System (RT-TRACS) is made up of several
modules. A data-processing and monitoring module selects the best strategy
to control the network of intersections, another module divides the network
into sections, and a simulation and evaluation module tests the strategy
and provides feedback to engineers.
The system organizes data as a set of past experiences that can be used
to predict and control signaling patterns. A case library, which can be
developed from field data or by using a simulation technique, can provide
predicted traffic conditions and the best control policy for certain traffic
conditions, such as inclement weather or special events. Factors such as
the location of the intersection, the time of day or the day of the week
can be factored into the predictions.
RT-TRACS measures traffic conditions by real-time volume and compares
them to those in the case library. The case that best matches the current
conditions is retrieved from the library, and the system automatically puts
a control strategy into motion.
The system can also display real-time graphics of system operation,
traffic flow and maintenance information so that traffic engineers monitoring
the system can view different data simultaneously.
