Group welcomes SGI with 'open' arms

Silicon Graphics Inc. has joined a forum to promote standard solutions that help organizations manage systems resources and respond to network interruptions and messages.

The Open Group, a vendor- and technology-neutral consortium dedicated to enterprise integration across the public and private sectors, announced Wednesday that SGI has joined the group's Real-Time and Embedded Systems Forum.

The forum brings together vendors of real-time and embedded solutions with corporate and government organizations that are potential customers. Federal members of the forum include the Defense Department's Open Systems Joint Task Force and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

Allen Brown, president and chief executive of The Open Group, said SGI was a perfect fit for the forum because the company offers scalable multiprocessor systems with built-in support for real-time applications, and software development tools for the specialized needs of real-time developers.

"Joining The Open Group's Real-Time and Embedded Systems Forum reinforces SGI's track record of real-time support for our IRIX operating system," said Gabriel Broner, vice president of the engineering strategic software organization at SGI.

Included in every version of IRIX is REACT software, which enables users in Unix operating systems to configure any multiprocessor system for guaranteed real-time operation.
