WAM!NET aims to make a splash

For having been on the General Services Administration schedule for less than a year, WAM!NET Government Services Inc. already boasts an impressive list of federal customers and is hoping to add more through its debut at the FOSE trade show in Washington, D.C.

The provider of digital networking, storage and hosting services has federal wins that include:

Being a subcontractor on the Navy Marine Corps Intranet deal, responsible for providing the base-area and local-area networks for data and voice capabilities. Hosting the e-commerce platform for the GSA Auctions Web site. Providing additional network connectivity between the University of Maryland Medical Center and six Immigration and Naturalization Service processing centers. The INS project enables agency employees to quickly take and read chest X-rays from potential immigrants to ascertain whether they have tuberculosis or other airborne infectious diseases, said Karen Adler, senior vice president of WAM!NET.

Telemedicine provider DIANAssociates Inc. hired WAM!NET to send the digital X-rays, which are about 10M in size, to be examined at the Maryland site.

"Before they were reading the X-rays the old-fashioned way, but now they are reading them within [hours] and making decisions about people at the various ports of entry, so there's no detention and holding," Adler said.

Eagan, Minn.-based WAM!NET is happy with its government wins but wants to make sure that it remains ahead of the curve in the ultracompetitive federal space, Adler said.

"For us, this is really an opportunity to enter the government community," she said. "We've been on the schedule less than a year and had never done business with the government before...so our primary objective is to get to know what the government's all about and what it's like to do business with them."
