Labor IT funds more than double

President Bush's fiscal 2002 Labor Department budget request would more than double funding for the department's information technology activities compared to the past fiscal year.

IT activities would receive $80 million in fiscal 2002, up from $37 million allocated in fiscal 2001. The increased money would fund the department's efforts "to replace duplicative and disparate systems" with a coordinated IT approach, according to Labor's budget briefing book.

The money would be used to buy software and develop an IT architecture that fits within Labor's capital investment management process.

"These information technology resources will ensure overall program effectiveness and communication among DOL programs, participants, and employees nationwide," according to the briefing book.
