Fiscal 2002 budget

Under the president's proposed budget for fiscal 2002, the Office of Personnel Management would receive $88 million for its information technology programs, up about $12 million from last year.

About $3 million would go to pay for the governmentwide Human Resources Data Network project, which is designed to streamline and automate the exchange of federal employees' human resources information.

OPM also would receive $21.7 million for the cost of automating recordkeeping systems for retirees. This will be a pivotal year for the Retirement Systems Modernization Project. Workers on the project will begin:

Developing its ability to capture data electronically that was previously only on paper. Developing software that will help ensure that employees are placed in the correct retirement program. Kicking off planning for a retirement benefits calculator. Under the fiscal 2002 budget proposal, OPM's Employment Service would receive an unspecified amount of money to implement an online workforce planning system to help federal agencies align human resources with the accomplishment of agency objectives and meet the president's goal to flatten the federal hierarchy.
