Asset-management lessons learned

Case studies have shown that a take-it- slowly approach often works best. Start with an area where you are most likely to be successful, such as inventory discovery and integrating inventory data into the help-desk functions. When you have demonstrated the value of this project, turn on the other modules in a phased implementation. But don't expect enthusiastic support at each level. Asset management affects everyone in the organization, so some turf may be stepped on. Take the time to learn how different divisions will use the new asset data, and make sure the data from those divisions is as good as it can be. Consider implementing the system at pilot sites before betting the whole ballgame on an enterprisewide, full deployment. Selecting the right asset-management software, selling the concept within the organization and managing implementation of the new system are all difficult tasks. But more and more enterprises are finding that the cost savings make the effort worthwhile. Plus, managers' ability to understand and manage their assets helps them get the organization's job done.
