AFPCA buys content management

The Air Force Pentagon Communications Agency (AFPCA) recently purchased 5,200 seats of Hummingbird Ltd.'s Enterprise, a document and content management solution.

The AFPCA awarded the contract to Hummingbird, a developer of enterprise information management solutions, Jan. 30, and implementation is expected to begin by the end of this month.

Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed, but it does include annual maintenance renewal, said Peter Auditore, vice president of U.S. marketing at Hummingbird.

The AFPCA is responsible for implementing a platform to provide Air Force headquarters staff with quick access to documents.

The agency searched for more than a year for a document management solution that could be customized to integrate with its existing installation and other applications, Auditore said, noting that Hummingbird Enterprise was chosen for its reliability, security and low total cost of ownership.

He said Hummingbird Enterprise's open architecture will offer the AFPCA an easy-to-use, flexible interface to manage its document and correspondence management system.

The environment provides a scalable solution that will integrate the electronic capture, search, retrieval, storage, flow, publication and archiving of all unstructured information, including e-mail messages, Microsoft Corp. PowerPoint presentations and nonclassified correspondence.

Using Hummingbird's document management technology, the AFPCA will create centralized, secure repositories where the staff will store electronic documents used for responding to requests for information from Congress and other government agencies, Auditore said.

In addition to the AFPCA, numerous other federal agencies already use Hummingbird Enterprise, including the Naval Air Systems Command; the Air National Guard; the Office of the Secretary of Defense; the departments of State, Energy and Justice; the General Accounting Office, the Internal Revenue Service; the Army; the Immigration and Naturalization Service; and the Federal Aviation Administration.
