CACI moves into 'shadows'

CACI International Inc. has completed its acquisition of Applied Technology Solutions of Northern Virginia Inc. (ATS), an information technology company that draws its clients exclusively from the national intelligence community.

CACI, based in Arlington, Va., announced the acquisition March 3 without disclosing financial information. The company wants to expand its presence in the so-called "shadow agencies," said Jack London, CACI's chairman and chief executive officer.

"We've been on a very distinct, well-defined path to becoming a billion-dollar company by fiscal '05, and we're ahead of schedule now," he said. "We're looking to be at $850 million in sales by the end of this fiscal year, June 30, 2003."

To grow stronger in the federal space, CACI has been developing capabilities in managed network services, defense engineering and security systems, London said. ATS is the company's 21st acquisition in the past decade.

CACI set a target to grow 12 percent to 15 percent a year internally and 5 percent to 8 percent a year through acquisition, he said. "We've pretty well been on that track. It's not been perfect, but we have been pretty consistent," he said.

ATS brings in about 80 employees and will generate about $12 million to $14 million in revenue in the next year, CACI estimates.
