Letters to the editor

Following are responses to an FCW.com poll question that asked: "Should federal IT project managers be made to qualify for their jobs?"

It is about time the government selected project managers based on skill set rather than political connections.

Only good can come of requiring project managers to be trained, experienced and held accountable for/rewarded for their actions. The taxpayers will finally get what they are paying for.

Project manager certification should not be limited to information technology. In the Defense Department and other government organizations, all project management positions should require certification.

A serious look at how business is conducted, requirements ownership and the appropriation of funds also are necessary. Most project funds are questionable from year to year. Users rarely assume total ownership of their requirements and requested changes.

Certification alone is not the answer to project overruns.
